Its a bit more complicated than that; the "LDP" is very much a (shifting) coalition of multiple parties. And the last time the Democratic Party got into power, they put a guy who proudly referred to himself as a space alien in as PM, who promptly tanked the economy and pissed off allies (namely the US). Can't blame the people for not wanting to try that again. Takaichi is claiming to be the successor to (the assassinated) Abe, the only one to really turn the economy around since the lost decade, so its not particularly surprising that people are willing to give her a shot.
