No one knows who the fuck the "respected leader" Trump was talking to was, but if it wasn't Khamenei, that means the plan is Iranian civil war. And due to the nature of Iran's military structure, even if it's some military coup plan and they can pull a bunch of the military to their side, IRGC/Basij would still be on Khamenei's side, so it'd be an ugly civil war. "Civil war supported by limited US boots on ground" has been the setup for every shithole quagmire we've ever been in. We just "sent a few guys in" to support ARVN, and then we were stuck there for 20 years. We just "sent a few guys in" to help the Karzai go ernment dislodge some dirt farmers, and we're stuck there for 20 years. This shit never ends up being a quick in-n-out. And this time, the civil war would be in a country with hundreds of miles of coastline in the world's most critical oil shipping region, with a bunch of highly-refined uranium floating around somewhere. The Strait would be vulnerable the entire damn time; all it takes is some dude on a fishing boat with a shopping bag of hand grenades to make an attack.
